Bollenstreekrit 2011

Mooiste File van NederlandThis Sunday 17th April is the VW aircooled display at the Keukenhof. AKA the Bollenstreekrit (there are also hundreds of other vintage cars on display)
As you might know, the flower park Keukenhof is one of the most beautiful spring gardens in the world which draws in more than 800,000 visitors from around the world in just 2 months.
On Sunday from 10:00 a.m until  2:00 p.m. the cars will be parked at the main entrance of the Keukenhof,  at 14:30 pm the cars will take a scenic drive through the region. This will end on the boulevard in Noordwijk where we will be closing the Best Traffic Jam in the Netherlands (de Mooiste File van Nederland)
Here it is also possible to talk about the nice day while enjoying a snack and a drink at one of the many restaurants or beach bars.
Of course everyone is free in his or her choice to only participate in the ride, visit the park or both.

VW Bus restoration – A photo history

VW T2b - original state

Uploaded to my picasa gallery is this public album of my bus. From the first photo taken when I was deciding to purchase her (with all the bits that needed work), holidays in France, Spain and Germany, the kids playing in her, the restoration and finally showing her off at the aircooled festival in January 2011.

More festivals to visit this year, so keep watching!

The bus – update

I dropped the bus off at the garage for its MOT and a nice long list of things I need doing including welding floor panels, brake calipers, engine refurb, electrics refurb, replace seatbelts, build the rocknroll bed that is still sitting in it’s box and give it a general top bill of health ready for the interior, when he found out how much I had paid for it he agreed it was a sound investment, but it’s still likely to be a sizeable bill.

These guys are pros with over 50 years of experience with aircooled VWs between them, I asked them to replace the rubbers on two if the windows, one didn’t need it and they patched up a hole in the other windows frame and then replaced the rubber… You wouldn’t have known they worked on it except it didn’t leak anymore, their advice about the brake calipers was true, it swings to the left when I brake..they sais don’t brake hard, and luckily I haven’t used it much over the winter.

Up after this is the floor, cupboards, drawers, fridge and upholstery.

When she’s complete we hope to travel to a few VW fairs and raise some $$ for the WKZ and Nierstichting.

1st coat is on

As it was a lovely sunny day, Ron and I managed to get the 1st coat of paint on the interior using rollers, it has been a few weeks coming while we got all the rust off and got her spankingly clean. So, we’ll need about 4 or 5 coats of this and then a hardner to finish, but it goes on like a dream and I have a couple of rattlecans for the difficult corners. I decided not to remove the windows as I really don’t want to spend more € on replacing the rubbers.

Pictured is Ron, my neighbour who is helping with the resto.

new look

So after much hassle with MovableType blog, i have taken the plunge and moved over to wordpress. Same content, new look. I hope you find the experience more pleasurable.

I will also be adding a new section called VW Camper which will chronicle the restoration of my 1973 VW Type2 camper van, so stay tuned.
